amynicole – On June 13, 2025, Google Cloud suffered a major outage that disrupted numerous online services across the internet. The issue began around 2 PM ET and initially affected several Google Cloud components and infrastructure. Google quickly responded by restoring access to its own applications. However, the disruption rippled through multiple third-party platforms that rely on Google Cloud services, affecting users globally.

Prominent services like Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, Etsy, UPS, and even gaming platforms like Pokémon Go and the Pokémon Trading Card Game experienced performance problems. Many users reported trouble loading content, logging in, or using key app features. DownDetector, a site that tracks service outages, showed a spike in reports across these platforms during the outage window.

By mid-afternoon, Google confirmed it had identified the cause and applied mitigations. Despite this, recovery was not uniform across all locations, and some systems remained affected hours later.

Google identifies root cause but recovery is partial

At 4:16 PM ET, Google released a public statement confirming that it had pinpointed the root cause of the outage. Engineers applied the necessary fixes to stabilize systems and restore services. Google Cloud infrastructure began recovering in most global regions except for “us-central1,” a key data center zone in the central United States.

According to Google, products and services depending on the affected infrastructure saw gradual recovery. The company acknowledged ongoing difficulties in “us-central1” and “multi-region/us,” stating that engineers were working to fully restore functionality. At the time of the announcement, Google did not provide a specific timeline for when the outage would be completely resolved.

This uneven recovery meant that some users continued to experience issues while others regained normal access to services. Google assured users that it was treating the incident with high priority and that its teams were closely monitoring progress across all regions.

Major platforms confirm service interruptions during the outage

Several tech companies confirmed the service problems caused by the Google Cloud outage. Snapchat posted updates on its support page acknowledging the disruption. OpenAI also issued a notice stating that some users were having trouble logging in due to external internet provider issues. The statement linked those problems to the broader internet infrastructure disruptions triggered by the Google Cloud event.

Spotify and Discord, among the most impacted platforms, experienced spikes in user-reported issues. By 5 PM ET, Spotify’s main page had resumed normal function, and DownDetector reports for most platforms began to decline to near-normal levels.

Even Amazon’s AWS, although not directly affected, saw a temporary increase in user reports. Amazon quickly issued a clarification stating that its core systems were operating normally and advised users to consult the AWS Health Dashboard for accurate updates.

Google Cloud services see residual impact into the evening

Despite progress toward full recovery, Google acknowledged that some of its cloud components remained affected well into the evening. As of 7:13 PM ET, services such as Google Cloud Dataflow, Vertex AI Online Prediction, and Personalized Service Health were still experiencing what the company called “residual impact.”

These lingering issues suggested that some backend systems and dependent cloud-based processes were not yet operating at full capacity. Google did not offer a precise estimate for complete recovery but committed to continuous updates and customer support during the restoration process.

Engineers continued monitoring the infrastructure across all zones to ensure stability and minimize further disruption. Google’s incident management approach focused on regional isolation of the problem, which helped speed up recovery in unaffected areas.

Cloud reliability under scrutiny after back-to-back outages

This incident follows other recent cloud-related issues that have raised questions about service reliability across major cloud providers. Although Amazon’s AWS clarified that it did not experience any systemic failures during the Google Cloud event, the coincidence of heightened reports led to user confusion and concern about broader cloud infrastructure resilience.

Google’s methodical but regionally staggered recovery underscored the complexity of restoring cloud operations after infrastructure-level failures. While Google has assured users of its commitment to transparency and robust engineering response, the incident highlighted the interconnected nature of today’s web services.

As reliance on cloud computing continues to grow, especially for high-traffic consumer platforms and enterprise applications, these kinds of outages emphasize the importance of redundancy and proactive communication. Google will likely provide a full post-incident report in the coming days to explain the root cause in more detail and outline steps taken to prevent recurrence.
