<p><strong><a href="https://amynicole.co/"><em>amynicole</em></a></strong> – About 40 miles north of Dallas lies Denton, a small city known for its universities and vibrant farmer’s market. Soon, it will also be home to a massive data center operated for OpenAI. This new facility is expected to consume around 390 megawatts of power, roughly doubling the city’s electricity needs by 2030. Bloomberg reports that this energy demand far exceeds typical data center consumption.</p>

<p>With nearly 160,000 residents, including 55,000 college students, Denton faces significant challenges. The added power consumption could strain the local electricity supply and even increase utility bills if demand surpasses availability. Similar situations have occurred in 13 Northeastern states, where rising energy needs have outpaced supply. To address this, local officials are working to upgrade the power grid and build new infrastructure to support the increased load.</p>



<p>The data center will run continuously, requiring relentless power to support OpenAI’s ChatGPT and developer API services. OpenAI underestimated the computing power needed for new features earlier in 2025, forcing delays in their release. This highlights the enormous electricity demands of running AI at scale. The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, remains focused on expanding data center capacity to meet future AI growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ownership, Expansion, and Environmental Concerns</h2>



<p>Although OpenAI operates the Denton data center, Core Scientific technically owns the site. Core Scientific, originally a bitcoin mining company, shifted focus to leasing data centers for AI firms. It is currently being acquired by CoreWeave, another AI data center company, in a $9 billion deal. CoreWeave will become the official owner of the Denton facility, marking a consolidation in the AI data center industry.</p>



<p>Texas is experiencing a rapid increase in data center construction, with several large projects emerging across the state. For example, the Stargate project—partially backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former President Trump—funds AI data centers like Oracle’s site in Texas. That facility consumes an impressive 1.2 gigawatts, enough to power 750,000 homes according to R&amp;D World.</p>



<p>However, this rapid growth poses risks to Texas’s already fragile power grid. The state suffered a major blackout in winter 2021 when extreme cold left millions without electricity. Additionally, data centers require huge amounts of water for cooling. Texas currently faces water shortages, raising concerns about the sustainability of such large-scale facilities.</p>
