WaveForms, founded in December 2024 by former Meta and OpenAI researcher Alexis Conneau and ex-Google strategist Coralie Lemaitre. Specialized in audio-focused large language models. The startup gained early recognition for its work on solving the Speech Turing Test—a benchmark to determine whether listeners can distinguish AI-generated speech from human voices.
According to reports, Meta hired both WaveForms co-founders as part of the acquisition. While financial terms were not disclosed, the startup had earlier raised $40 million in funding from investors including Andreessen Horowitz. The move signals Meta’s strategic interest in developing emotional and human-like voice interactions, an area where it currently lags behind competitors.
